Let’s Talk About Indiana’s Current Legislation on Reproductive Rights
The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) believes that public policy must affirm the constitutional right of privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices. LWVUS also believes that every US resident should have access to a basic level of quality health care at an affordable cost, including medically determined necessary abortion.
Women are humans under the federal and state constitutions with rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, right? Not so much in Indiana. We'll provide a run-down on the current legislative state of women's healthcare rights in Indiana and across the country, blow up some myths about abortion and contraceptives, and talk about what we can do to change the current reproductive healthcare restrictions in Indiana.
Guest Speaker Deb Chubb is a lifelong Hoosier from NWI. She is an attorney by training and spent most of her career in the nonprofit sector in LaPorte County. She began working to help elect pro-choice women to the Indiana State Legislature in 2017. She created an organization called 25 Women for 2020 in 2019. As the Executive Director for this organization, she travelled throughout the state to recruit pro-choice women to run, developed training and support systems for women candidates, and helped women navigate the difficult experience that is unique to women candidates. In 2021, the organization was renamed Indiana Women's Action Movement and continued to recruit, train, and support pro-choice candidates running for the State Legislature. Deb also created a podcast called, Electable with Deb Chubb, to inform Hoosiers about politics and urgent issues in the State of Indiana which is available on YouTube, Spotify and other streaming platforms.
The League of Women Voters works to empower voters and defend democracy. The National League of Women Voters continues to track legislative attacks on reproductive rights and democracy, as well as to serve as a resource for state and local Leagues advocating against harmful, and in support of protective, legislative measures.
